Fatwa against short skirts

I just read on every German's daily dose of news Spiegel.de about a recent radicalization of the Indian relation towards sexuality (which I do not happen to know much of, myself :)), caused by Sania Mirza's (the tennis player) and actress Khushboo's offensive stance towards sexual liberalism. Virtually everybody they interview, from members of the parliament to the New Delhi minister of health Anbumani Ramadoss, seems to say: "we should not adopt Western lifestyles in every aspect/ we do have sex but we don't talk about it".
While I wouldn't be able to say much about that, I think it's interesting how such a topic is discussed in German media with literal quotes being translated into German and leading to very 'German-style' quotes which probably don't say much about the real sensitivities tackled in that issue. The translation seems to make the discourse 'accessible' to German readers but, as a pay-off, seems to obscure the real cultural gap. The facts, however, are interesting enough, speaking of important Russian porno and the sexualization of fashion TV shows etc.
I guess there's no replacement for 'seeing for yourself' :)
Warm greetings from the Rhine,
Stefan

Oh its pretty crazy. Completely schizo. Sania has bodyguards and police protection - poor Khushboo was harangued for months for her sensible outlook towards contraception. This becomes ferocious when it comes to homosexuality naturally - so when two adult women decide to go to another city and live together - after performing a simple commitment ceremony, the police and their parents intervene, seperate them, torture them, and it is all considered for their own good. Or men looking for company in chat rooms, or HIV prevention workers are jailed and tortured by the police for 'spreading' indecency and homosexuality. All this time of course, women keep on getting raped with impunity, people continue to die of AIDS and lack of information, and generations grow up ignorant of their bodies, their own jurisdiction over them, and the pleasures that they could provide, as well as emotionally crippled and severely un/misinformed about health and reproductive issues.
Whoa, I never thought it would be that bad. In Germany probably the only reason they write about it (because they didn't do that before) is because it has the word 'fatwa' in it which encompasses everything 'evil' in Islam for a German readership and thus makes for a newsworthy topic...
